We are excited to open registration for our third and final round of 2023 Wild Splendor tour offerings, taking place this December in Vancouver, Washington! Back by popular demand, we invite you to join us for a chance to observe chum salmon at spawning grounds they’ve been returning every winter for thousands of years. This site located near the I-205 bridge is one of only a handful of chum spawning salmon grounds remaining on the Columbia River. Each winter we celebrate their return and the resiliency of nature.

Update as of November 1st, 2023: Registration for these three dates filled up very quickly, and we no longer have spots available for these tours. We thank you for your interest, and we apologize to anyone who wasn’t able to sign up this year! The availability of dates at this site is limited by three key factors: The short spawning window for the salmon, the timing of low tides on the Columbia River, and our desire to be good neighbors by keeping a light footprint at this site. If you weren’t able to join us, we do hope you’ll stay tuned for next year’s opportunity and enjoy other events with us in the meantime.

If you were able to sign up successfully, please keep reading below to review event details.

  • Friday, 12/1/23 at 2:30pm (Registration is full for this date)
  • Thursday 12/7/23 at 8:00am (Registration is full for this date)
  • Tuesday 12/12/23 at 11:00am (Registration is full for this date)

What to Expect: We will be gathering outdoors, rain or shine, at an uncovered site overlooking the banks of the Columbia River. Please dress for cold or wet weather per the forecast! We will meet at a parking area in Vancouver and then carpool to our destination in a nearby residential area. Directions to our meeting point for the day will be included in your confirmation email after registering.

Our destination includes a brief walk over a short, woodchip-covered trail to a small wooden viewing platform. The presentation involves about 40 minutes of standing as we provide viewing opportunities, storytelling, and time for Q&A. There is a small bench on the platform where one can take a seat as needed. There are no restroom facilities available.

Contact: If you have any questions about logistics or accessibility on this tour, or to make changes to your registration, please contact Peter Condra at events@columbialandtrust.org, or at (503) 847-3342.
