Volunteer Opportunity: Tree Planting at Cranes' Landing - February 23rd, 2024 - Columbia Land Trust
Help us create a wildlife hedge by planting bareroot trees and shrubs at Cranes' Landing.

Native Tree Planting at Cranes’ Landing

Based on our recent Wild Splendor tours in Vancouver, many of our friends and supporters may be familiar with our farm at Cranes’ Landing where we work to support threatened sandhill cranes. Since we took over stewardship of this site in 2016, we’ve seen a heartening twofold increase in the number of cranes feeding at this site each year!

This winter, we’re continuing to enhance conditions for wildlife by planting 1,000 bareroot trees and shrubs along the perimeter of these farm plots. As this hedge fills in, it will provide crucial privacy for the cranes and habitat for countless songbirds and pollinators. If you’re undaunted by mud, rain, and cold winter weather, we invite you to join us for a morning of volunteer work with our team! See below for event details and registration.

Date: Friday, February 23rd, 2024

Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Location: Cranes’ Landing, located five miles west of downtown Vancouver (Directions provided in confirmation email)

What to Expect: We will be working outdoors planting bareroot trees and shrubs in an uncovered area on uneven grassy terrain. This is repetitive physical work that can be tiring, so participants are encouraged to work at a pace that is comfortable for them. Our work will continue rain or shine, so please dress appropriately. Coffee, water, and light snacks will be provided, as well as a porta-potty on site. All volunteers will be asked to sign our Participant Release Form upon registration.

 What to wear and bring:

  • Sturdy, waterproof boots that can be worn in muddy conditions
  • Gardening gloves, if you have them (we’ll have extras)
  • Dress in waterproof layers to prepare for possible rain and cold weather
  • Please bring your own reusable bottle with water or hot tea to stay warm and hydrated
