UPDATE: As of September 24, 2021, following recent rain and lower fire danger, the Klickitat River Haul road is now open to the public from all access points.
As of July 13, 2021, ALL portions of the Klickitat River haul road from all access points are closed to public access due to high fire danger. Access status will be updated as conditions change. Thank you for helping to protect natural resources and public safety during this remarkably hot, dry summer.
How do we decide when fire danger is high? We use the Washington Department of Natural Resource’s Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) system to determine fire danger, because they are the experts. The haul road is located in zone 609W. The current IFPL is 3, which means the haul road is closed to public access.
How can I find out when the road reopens? Go to the Washington DNR webpage (https://fortress.wa.gov/dnr/protection/ifpl/) and look up the status for zone 609W. If it is 1 or 2, the road is open. If it is a 3 or 4, the road is closed. We will also to continue to share updates on our website.
What will happen if I go anyway? Disregarding landowner wishes can lead to closures and further use restrictions. No one wants that. The haul road is regularly patrolled and you may be cited for criminal trespass by the Klickitat County Sheriff. If you accidentally start a fire, you will be held liable for suppression costs. No one wants that either. Please come enjoy the road when things cool off.
