Coastal Birdwatching – September 27th, 2025
Our fall wildlife tours kick off with visit to wetlands at the mouth of the Chinook and Columbia Rivers
Columbia Land Trust invites you to join us for an afternoon of birdwatching at the confluence of the Chinook and Columbia Rivers. This property, which we call Chinook River Confluence, includes 198 acres that was conserved by Columbia Land Trust in 2024, with funding from Bonneville Power Administration. This area is of great importance to seabirds and migratory birds, as well as other wildlife including bear, elk, beaver, black-tailed deer, and many species of fish.
On this tour you’ll be guided by Land Trust Coast & Estuary Natural Area Manager, Alex Von Bergman, as well as Monitoring Scientist and expert birder, Cindy McCormack. We’ll share the conservation importance of this location and then explore the property and observe seabirds.
When: Saturday, September 27th, 2025 from 1:00 – 3:00pm
Where: The coordinates for this property are 46°18’03.1″N 123°57’57.2″W or you can navigate to here on Google Maps
Driving Directions: From Astoria, cross the Astoria-Megler Bridge into Washington and take a left to follow highway 101 North. After passing the town of Chinook, our parking lot will be marked with an a-frame sign on your left as you drive north, just before hitting the Chinook River Bridge.
What to Expect: We will gather outdoors, rain or shine, in a gravel parking lot before traversing the edges of a tidal wetland that can be muddy, uneven, and feature knee-high grasses. We recommend dressing for the forecast and wearing boots and clothes that you’re comfortable getting wet and muddy. Guests are encouraged to bring their own binoculars for bird observation; if you do not own a pair, please reach out to us and we will work on providing binoculars for you. There are no restrooms on site at this location, but there are some wooded areas where you can relieve yourself as needed.
Contact: If you have questions about this tour, please contact Peter Condra at pcondra@columbialandtrust.org or text at (503) 847-3342.
