Conservation does not end with Columbia Land Trust acquiring interest in a property, it is just the beginning! Protecting and enhancing the conservation values of the lands we acquire is some of the most important work the Land Trust is involved in. The goal of the Columbia Land Trust Stewardship Program is to be the most credible and capable stewards of land as possible, in perpetuity.
Columbia Land Trust evaluates every property for its conservation value, as well as the threats to these values. A stewardship plan is developed and implemented based on this analysis to include detailed annual monitoring. The stewardship program, therefore, requires a high level of intimacy with the land.
Stewardship of the land will mean finding out what hidden assets exist. By getting our noses in the rocks, our hands in the streams and our eyes to the trees we will discover a lot about our conserved lands. And perhaps, we will discover something about ourselves as well.
- Stewardship:
- 1: the office, duties, and obligations of a steward
2: the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care- Conservation:
- 1: a careful preservation and protection of something; especially planned management of a natural resource to prevent exploitation, destruction, or neglect
The Columbia Land Trust is seeking volunteers interested in supporting the stewardship program.
We need your help! Possible volunteer opportunities include:
Site Work
Protect site conservation values by clearing exotic species such as Himalayan blackberry and Scots broom. Maintain conservation lands by picking up trash and installing signs. Enhance conservation values by re-establishing native plant communities. A willingness to get down and dirty is all that is required for these activities.
Baseline Data Collection
Put your field identification skills to the test conducting surveys of site flora and fauna. Carefully collect and document data regarding water quality. If you have particular areas of expertise that will help the land trust make management decisions, such as forest ecology or bird identification, please let us know. Or just come ready to learn and assist in the data collection process.
Monitoring
Volunteer to be a local steward for a property. Select volunteers in local communities can assist in keeping watch on land trust properties; participate in stewardship planning and help coordinate stewardship activities.
Education and Outreach
Volunteer to teach other volunteers what you know, lead natural history tours and coordinate volunteers on stewardship activities.
General Support
Your chance to assist is a variety of other ways! Volunteer to research resource information, log photographs, put together mapping tools or maintain databases. To learn more about ways you can volunteer to help Columbia Land Trust in our work, please see our Volunteer Listings. Let us know what your interests and skills are and we will put you to work.
In order to make the most of your time and meet the needs of the Columbia Land Trust we ask that you complete a volunteer contact form.
