Learn about the Columbia Land Trust's initiative to protect vital habitats

Vital habitats
The Pacific Northwest is renowned for its wildlife, including deer, bear, salmon, resident and migrating birds, and numerous species of native trees and plants. Many populations are in jeopardy from commercial development, road building and unsustainable logging that disrupt ecosystems and degrade habitat.

Columbia Land Trust is working to conserve habitats that are strategically important to protecting the region’s at-risk plants and animals. For example, a large percentage of remaining spawning grounds for chum salmon in the Columbia River are under our stewardship. While the size of the protected land is relatively small, it has tremendous significance to maintaining future runs of chum salmon, which once numbered in the millions.
