TRUST TALK

Volume 9, Issue 1 Spring 2002

Conserving signature landscapes and vital habitat together with the communities of the Columbia River region

Columbia riverfront property conserved

“Everybody should feel this,
hear it, know it. Everybody.”

~ Dory Brooking
By Glenn Lamb

On December 21 2001, Columbia Land Trust founding members Dory and Emil “Brook” Brooking donated a conservation easement to Columbia Land Trust on their 12-acre Columbia riverfront property east of Vancouver. The easement will ensure that the property is kept in conservation forever and available for public access to the river. In addition, the Clark College Foundation will be allowed to build and operate an environmental education center on the property.

“We just watched so much of our open space disappear. We have a choice, and we don’t want this open space to disappear” says Dory.

The Brookings’ initial 1989 investigations about conserving their land led directly to the formation of Columbia Land Trust. It took twelve years to complete the easement, in part because of the extraordinary effort the Brookings took to involve all eight of their children in the decision. The kids grew up on the property and in the river, exploring, swimming, camping, birdwatching and boating. In the end, all eight kids sent Brook and Dory personal letters asking that the property be conserved for public access and environmental education. By signing the easement, the Brookings and their kids forgo substantial financial profit that would have come through development of the property.

The river continues to fascinate them. “Right now, huge waves are crashing over the rocks and our dock.” Dory draws the word “huge” across an octave, like a wave. “Out in the middle, the waves are in patterns. Clear water along one line, green water the other way.” This year, an eagle graced a tree on Christmas Day. In spring a dozen wood ducks took roost. The Brookings watched the babies hatch and take flight. “Everybody should feel this, hear it, know it. Everybody.” Dory emphasizes every syllable of the word as if counting off people. “People don’t even know it’s here. The world needs to be inspired. Let it come out of them with a camera or a paintbrush or a poem. This is what the world needs.”

Great Lands, Great Actions

Glenn Lamb's Musings

The lower Columbia River Region is an integral part of the Pacific Flyway, home to two national forests, four state forests, six national wildlife refuges, a national scenic area, and a national volcanic monument. Our region includes some of the best farming and forestry land in the world. All available to be seen right from your car window.

But in spite of this grandeur, lately I’ve come to realize how shallow the driving experience is. There is so much more to the land than these great views. Throughout our region private landowners are overcoming huge obstacles to keep their lands the way they are.

I’ve met a librarian who took out a second mortgage on her home to buy six acres of critical habitat – just to conserve it. I know an 85-year old man who still clears the blackberries, runs the tractors, plants trees, so his land will be available for wildlife. I know a rancher who has pledged that his miles of ranchland along a wild and scenic river will never be developed.

There is a personal story that goes with every piece of land you see from your car window. I am forever grateful for the increasing numbers of private landowners who are stepping forward to conserve land even in the face of daunting personal challenges.

As our population grows, may we always be able to sit alone in a forest grove; to stand in awe of those remarkable Gorge views; to swim with our children and grandchildren in that same river where we swam as kids; to fish and hunt; and to know the great open spaces from coast to mountains along this grand river.

May we acknowledge those private landowners who take great actions to conserve these lands forever.

Recently conserved lands

Hines Marsh
Hines Marsh, Long Beach Peninsula, Washington

East Fork Lewis River

This free-flowing river to the Columbia is important for salmon, waterfowl and public recreation. In partnership with Vancouver/Clark Parks and Recreation, Columbia Land Trust acquired 112 acres, a last critical link in connecting 15 miles of publicly owned land.

Hines Marsh

Partnering with the Grays Harbor Audubon Society, the Land Trust conserved a critical connection for the Hines Marsh wetlands complex on the Long Beach Peninsula.

Columbia Gorge

A 12-acre link for the Cape Horn Loop Trail, part of the proposed Washougal to Stevenson Trail through the Columbia Gorge.

Camas Prairie

Forty acres of Ponderosa pine and grassland habitat for elk and sandhill cranes, Canada geese and migratory and resident birds such as raptors, bluebirds, shrikes and warblers.

New additions

Brad Paymar

Brad is the new Office Manager. Raised in Minnesota, and married to a Washington gal, he skis (naturally), hikes and plays soccer when he's not holding down the fort at Columbia Land Trust.

By Eric Holmes

My great uncle was a gill-netter on the lower Columbia River. Year in, year out he spent summer fishing the river, fall and spring mending nets. He filled the rest of the year raising a modest herd of cattle on a small farm on the lower river, his boats tied up to the dock in the slough out front. The same farm where my father spent his childhood. Learning from his uncle the trade of fishing and the art of mending nets and raising beef. The same farm where I grew up learning awe, fear and respect for the Columbia while realizing the inextricable relationship between this river, my family and the rest of the Northwest.

For my twelfth birthday, I got an old duck skiff with a rotten hull and no ribs, attached to a 30-year old 7.5 horse Johnson outboard. I spent all summer on the river going from fish boat to fish boat, sometimes so numerous as to form a bridge across the inner channels. I was regaled with stories from fisherman, of past harvests that today seem like fiction. In the fall of that year, my father and I duck hunted, getting up before dawn and rowing ourselves to the other side of the slough to sit in
the cold on the banks of the river and let the wonder of the waking world distract us from the duck sitting amidst our decoys.

Midsummer sturgeon fishing trips, with the river like glass and the world so silent a whisper would carry forever. Looking from the boat to shore and seeing nothing but trees, hills and river life.

I now have a family of my own with a son so young that he doesn’t yet know the excitement he will have visiting his grandparents on the farm where his dad and grandpa grew up; the lessons he will learn from us, and those he will learn on his own from the river. When my great uncle passed away, he left the farm to my parents, something for which I will forever be grateful. My son will always have that place to go, those things to do and see, and the myths and stories of my family’s history there to carry on. My wife and I know that this place is how it is because of a unique combination of good stewardship, good fortune and plain, old fashioned luck. We know it will only stay that way if all of us in this region value the importance of our relationship with the river. While we will always have a family home on the river, it is important to us to conserve the values it represents throughout the region. My wife and I have joined the Columbia Heritage Circle by putting Columbia Land Trust in our will. We have ensured that part of our family’s legacy will support the conservation efforts of the Land Trust so our son, his family and succeeding generations will be able to enjoy the wonder of the lower Columbia River forever.

Volunteer land stewardship

Volunteers clearing Scotch broom
Volunteers clearing Scotch broom
By Joe Buttafucco

On a cold rainy day in March, more than 20 volunteers cleared, sorted, cut and hauled on the "Green Cathedral" property, donated by John and C.B. Chapman in 1993. It is in the heart of fast-developing Clark County surrounded by industry and residences. Yet, it is an important wild area for neo-tropical migratory birds, deer, coyote and small mammals.

Americorps volunteers cleared Scotch broom, removed blackberries, and hauled garbage, including a car(!).

We are incredibly thankful for the time and hard work that volunteers devote to help us steward our conservation lands.

Individual members

The most important piece of our conservation puzzle.
Wildflowers, Columbia Hills
By Terry Cornelius, Board member

For the last 30 years I've watched conservation groups start up, grow and mature. One thing that always comes to my mind is why do they need my support, my little individual membership. I see them receiving grants of thousands, or even millions of dollars.

Columbia Land Trust has been wildly successful these last 10 years so what does my one individual membership contribute? Actually, the whole wonderful ballgame.

Each individual member is the basic foundation of any organization's success. A dozen individuals founded Columbia Land Trust more than a decade ago. It has grown because many individual members joined in with their support and help. It has succeeded because all these members worked together to show our communities, grant makers and major donors that the conservation work we believe in can become a reality. We have worked from a heartfelt "vision"…. to the reality of regional private land conservation. Each large grant or donation we receive is always screened through the lens of our membership support. These generous folks love that we have grown from 50 to 1,000 members. They see we have a large base of community support. We get large donations because our individual members are the ambassadors of our land conservation work. Your participation, membership and $25, $100 or $500 donation is the very rock our Land Trust is built on. We need you, we welcome your help and we are very grateful for your continued commitment…thank you ONE and all.

Meyer Memorial Trust awards grant

Meyer Memorial Trust invested, for a secon time, in the Land Trust's organizational growth, membership and land conservation by awarding a generous $360,000 grant. The grant will be used to continue to increase membership and private donations for land conservation as well as with transaction costs to secure lands for conservation. We are deeply grateful to the Meyer Memorial Trust for its continued commitment to private voluntary land conservation!

The Ray Hickey Membership Challenge for 2002

Ray Hickey Foundation matches membership donations up to $50,000.
