For the first nine years, the Land Trust was all an volunteer organization, focused primarily on Clark County, Washington. During this time we conserved approximately 450 acres of land. In 1999, Columbia Land Trust’s board of directors made the decision, through conservation and strategic planning, to expand the geographic scope of the Land Trust to include lands from the eastside of the Cascades to the mouth of the Columbia River in both Oregon and Washington. To date, we have conserved over 6,500 acres of land throughout the region.
This growth and these accomplishments would not have been possible without the financial and volunteer contributions each and every one of you makes to Columbia Land Trust. You ensure that the magnificent lands of the lower Columbia River region will be conserved for generations to come.
2004 proved to be one of our most productive years to date. Highlights include:
- Conservation of 1,600 acres, a 34% increase in lands conserved!
- Restoration and stewardship of over 4,000 acres of critical habitat.
- Grant funding totaling $1,300,000 for conservation and restoration of land.
- Membership grew 18 percent to 1,240.
Looking ahead to 2005 and beyond, the Land Trust is again undertaking a comprehensive review of our strategic direction and conservation priorities. Our goal is to focus our efforts on conserving the most critical lands in our region and to build the capacity, structure and vision to conserve these lands in perpetuity. We will be seeking input from our members, donors and people from the communities we serve as a major component of this planning. If you would like to participate or give feedback, please contact us.
This report provides you with a summary of our financial condition in 2004. Our efforts are singularly focused on land conservation. We work hard to make our members’ dollars available for land conservation while taking care to build an organization that will outlive us all.

The support of each and every one of these individuals, corporations, and foundations has made our work possible. You conserve land! Thank you.
In the past, we have listed our recent donors in each issue of the newsletter. Beginning with this edition of the Annual Report, we will instead list our donors once a year in an Annual Report format. We hope you find this new format to be informative and complete. When I look at the sheer volume of donors to the Land Trust this year, I am inspired. I hope you will be as well.
I want to give special recognition to our volunteers. Today, the Land Trust stewards over 4,000 acres of conserved lands, and we could simply not do that without your support. Stewardship volunteers, as individuals and in groups, as bird counters or as tree planters, truly make it possible for us to care for our lands. There are many other ways that volunteers get the work of the Land Trust done. All of our legal services are provided for free by our legal team. Other volunteers serve on fundraising, strategic planning, finance, and lands committees. In addition, many of you help us with our day to day work- from stuffing envelopes to setting up for our Auction, volunteers are with us every step of the way. Thank you!

Columbia River Estuary
Grays River: Completed the Grays Bay Conservation Area with the addition of four sites and approximately 300 acres. The Grays Bay Conservation Area includes nearly 1000 acres of conserved land in the Grays and Deep river watersheds with some of the last remaining old growth spruce wetlands in the Columbia River estuary. The Land Trust is implementing the largest restoration effort of this nature in the Estuary- returning the river floodplains to tidal influence for salmon habitat and restoring wetlands.
Columbia River islands and floodplains: Through a 50-year conservation lease with SaltChuk Resources (Foss Maritime), the Land Trust brought 700 acres of Columbia River islands and floodplains in the lower river and estuary into conservation. Some of the islands will be used as secure habitat for the federally endangered Columbian white-tailed deer.
Walluski River: Conserved 50 acres of estuarine wetlands and forest south of Astoria, Oregon along the Walluski River.
Abernathy Creek: Conserved salmon and steelhead habitat through six conservation easements along the riparian and shoreline of Abernathy Creek which flows into the Columbia River near Longview, Washington.
East of the Cascade Mountains
Klickitat River: Conserved an additional 550 acres along the Klickitat River in Washington. The Land Trust has conserved approximately 1,500 acres of oak and pine woodland along the lower Klickitat River. This area is ideal for salmon and steelhead, migratory songbirds, eagles, and abundant wildlife supported by the wild and scenic Klickitat River and rich oak habitat.
Vancouver
Vancouver tidelands: Donation of Columbia shore and tidelands in Vancouver for public enjoyment and recreation.
Woods Landing: Conserved an additional three acres of critical chum salmon spawning habitat at Woods Landing along the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington. The site is one of the only 3 sites for chum spawning on the entire Columbia River.
Chapman’s Green Cathedral: Through the Chapman’s estate, we conserved five additional acres to their 10-acre preserve and received a 10-acre tradeland for the Land Trust to sell to benefit the Stewardship Fund.

Great Lands Great Actions Capital Campaign
